Zwilling J.A.Henckels was
founded in the Klingenstadt (knives-blade town of) Solingen and already at the beginning of the 20th century became the biggest manufacturer of knives and cutlery worldwide.
The city of Solingen plays the biggest role for knives and cutlery in Germany.
Already mentioned in 1067 as town in Bergisches Land, the manufacturing of knife-blades in Solingen is testified already at the beginning of the 13th century.
Today not only the company Zwilling is based here but also the manufacturers Carl Mertens, Picard & Wielpütz and Paul Wirths, in Solingen also was founded the legendary company Carl Hugo Pott in 1904.
Founded in 1731 under the sign of the zodiac twins the company
has got her present name already in the 18th century from Johann Abraham Henckels who has been responsible for the fortunes of the company.
In the course of the 19th century the brand in the Klingenstadt (knives-blade town of) Solingen was able to introduce different technical novelties, so that the steady rise of the company required even an own steel production.
Zwilling achieved a special prominence by the production of knife blades with a hardened, rustproof steel, invented in 1939 and later patented for the company.
From presentations on the world exhibitions of the 19th and 20th century the company Zwilling could return to Solingen several times with the first price.
Also the company was ennobled as a K.u.K court supplier of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
Zwilling supplied many big tableware
manufacturers in Germany and Europe with knife blades, the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik WMF, August Wellner and Berndorf delivered their cutleries with the 'Friodur ' blades of Zwilling.
Then at the beginning of the 20th century also own cutlery models were designed and produced, in a chrome nickel steel – the so-called 'Friosil' - and even silver plated.
Quite an especially nice model from this time is the pattern No.2810 of the designer and architect Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot born in Solingen. Breuhaus worked mainly in Germany as well as in Switzerland and was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund and the Association of German Architects.
Fritz August Breuhaus also designed furniture in steel for the famous company Thonet.
The production of silver plated cutleries ended in the middle of the 20th century in favour of the stainless steel tableware.
The enterprise was converted into a corporation in which the family Henckels only after 238 years lost their majority.
The Zwilling AG experienced other expansion during the next years.
In 1995 both cutlery manufacturers from Bremen, Wilkens & sons and the Bremen Silberwarenfabrik BSF, were taken over, latter continued as brand for cutleries in functional design until today by Zwilling.
Today among the numerous cutlery manufacturers in Solingen Zwilling is one of the biggest, and maintains production plants in whole Europe and overseas.
In the location Solingen high-quality knives are produced.
High-quality cutleries with excellent blade and well-balanced proportions: these are the cutleries with hollow handle knives as they were already made in the end of the 90s, like the pattern Argo and Meteo, Arona and Corvus.
These cutleries have a generous size and an notable stress on the knife which is made in traditional manner.
These models are really masculine and have a big dimension with more than 23-cm-long knives,
Corvus even matches to the cooking knife series.
These high-quality cutleries
were complemented in 2014 with two interesting patterns. The pattern Midtown designed by Matteo Thun, elegantly partially matted, in a nice material strength and best haptics.
Mayfield from the same year is a new interpretation of the classical German 'Spaten' (spade), also a longer pattern but balanced by her slender appearance.
Palatable, as well as cutleries were always and wont't fall out of fashion.
The brand from the Bergisches Land can satisfy customer wishes for inexpensive cutleries with a whole series of models in assembled sets:
Bela, a diversified household series and the popular Minimale matt, already in 2011 also penned by Matteo Thun.
Quite a straight unobtrusive cutlery is outstanding by his eponymous minimalism. Greenwich matt, Nottingham, Aberdeen and King are sets which can fit brillinat to a new founded household. Everything is included, and within everybody’s reach.
For over 285 years the competence
of Zwilling J.A. Henckels lies in the production of knife-blades of steel. And this is notable at these cutleries from the core product range:
Masculine charisma, good steel and good blades, these are the main qualities you may expect from the high-quality Zwilling J.A.Henckels cutleries.
