Martin Heinrich Wilkens founded the company in 1810, a cutlery was not natural for everybody at all: The company was founded as a workshop and mint institution for board silver for the prospering Hanseatic town Bremen, but also for the kingdom of Hannover. At the middle of the 19th century the cutlery became popular and boomed, also as a status symbol. In the course of the industrial revolution cutleries could be made in serial production now and new procedures of galvanisation permitted, to produce silver plated cutlery in series also. Wilkens & sons as one of the oldest German silver manufactures participated from this impetus. Only after the Second World War the company also started to produce conformist cutleries from stainless steel in Bremen, inexpensive and the time taste.
characterised by a pleasant haptics, to adequate dimensions and a well carried out design from which reveals the creation well, however, is never obstrusive. These qualities stretch through the whole range of Wilkens, no matter whether it is a cutlery from sterling silver or an inexpensive cutlery from stainless steel. Merely with the cutleries from sterling silver there is the exception of both historical models the Ermitage and Venezia, both reproductions of cutlery models from the 19th century on old tools from the fund of the company. In addition, traditional cutleries dominate with the cutleries of real silver in the typically way of Wilkens: with a moderate design. Only two cutleries in the assortment of the real silver cutleries which is permanently in stock show a modern design: Palladio, a flagship of the assortment of Wilkens and Classic, a design from 1960 which is made exclusively in sterling silver. Palladio is also available in silver plated and as a cutlery for every day in stainless steel. This sketch of Ulla and Martin Kaufmann from the nineties refers in the design discreet to floral motives: leaves and peduncles were the models for the gracile shape.
is produced like all cutleries in this material, of a core from german silver, an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc and a layer of silver on it. This material has to the silver comparable qualities, nevertheless, is far more robust. Most cutleries of Wilkens in silver plated are produced on this material which also allows the fine elaboration of the ornaments. We find in the range of the silvered cutleries more models with modern designs: to all at the head Epoca of Wolf Karnagel from the nineties. How so many cutleries of Wilkens which are also still available many decades after her origin, as well as the typical cutlery Tulipan or the model Margeriten, sketched in the 19th century by Heinrich Vogeler. The painter who became known in Germany particularly by his painting from Jugendstil, worked and lived very close to Bremen in the artist's colony cofounded by him: Worpswede. Both cutlery patterns are still made today by Wilkens & sons in Bremen - however, also many old cutlery models Wilkens keeps in the so-called collectors edition. Please, calculate some delivery time with orders from this assortment. With the cutleries from stainless steel Wilkens could probably reach the biggest spreading, all new designs for the material steel. Wilkens could win different famous designers for these new design lines. To name Wolf Karnagel, Ulla and Martin Kaufmann, Katja Höltermann and Walter Storr among many others. We like with the stainless steel cutleries of Wilkens particularly that every single pattern has got his own unmistakeable character. And, nevertheless, one clearly recognises that these can be only from the house Wilkens & sons: Well formed cutleries in a respectable material strength in a decent quality.
