Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned a silverware, which became an excellent example of the French Empire. The pattern was later named after the castle of his wife, empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, which was called vernacular "mal maison" because of its originally lamentable state - a name that remained long after she turned it into a bright castle.
The palm leaf, a typical ornament of the Napoleonic Empire, is surrounded by the central motif of the antiquating lotus leaf. This symbol of military success had to be used by the silversmiths on instructions in the decor, the orderer should have accompanied it even in battles.
